Healthy Youngsters, Healthy Dads – world first program made possible by Greater Charitable Foundation

30 August 2018

The Greater Charitable Foundation has announced the University of Newcastle as the largest partner in its 2017 funding round.

The Foundation will donate $350,000 over three years to support Healthy Youngsters, Healthy Dads (HYHD), led by Chief Investigator Professor Phil Morgan, Acting Co-Director of UON’s Priority Research Centre for Physical Activity and Nutrition, along with Co-Investigators Professor Clare Collins, Dr Myles Young, Dr Alyce Barnes and Ms Emma Pollock.

Anne Long, CEO of the Greater Charitable Foundation, said “We support partners whose work improves life outcomes within our communities. We are excited to be working with UON on such an innovative program that will have lasting, positive impacts on families all over the Hunter.”

HYHD will build on the success of other father-focused healthy lifestyle programs run by Professor Morgan’s team, Dads And Daughters Exercising and Empowered (DADEE) and Healthy Dads, Healthy Kids (HDHK), which engage primary school-aged children as role models for healthy living in the family home.

HYHD will be the world’s first obesity prevention program to target fathers and preschool-aged children.

“This program will teach parents how to instil positive lifestyle behaviours in kids from a really early age. The activities will be hands-on and loads of fun for the participants, but most importantly, we are providing evidence-based tools and resources to families in our community so they can lead healthier, more fulfilling lives,” Professor Morgan said.

“We are incredibly grateful for the generous support of the Greater Charitable Foundation. The grant is so important, because it means my team and I can get out into the community and use our unique skills and knowledge to make a real difference,” he continued.

This is the University of Newcastle’s first grant from the Greater Charitable Foundation, which has committed more than $7 million to a range of community partners since its inception in 2011.
