Healthy Dads inspire positive change

26 April 2021

Helping kids stay healthy and active is a huge challenge for parents and caregivers today. And while fathers have a powerful influence on children’s weight and behaviours, most family- based lifestyle programs are attended by mothers.

A unique program developed by University of Newcastle researchers is kicking goals in promoting positive lifestyle behaviours among fathers and their pre-school aged children.

Healthy Youngsters, Healthy Dads is an evidence-based 8-week program connecting dads with their children as they learn about healthy lifestyle behaviours and participate in rough and tumble play, sports skills and fitness activities together. Dads also attend ‘dads-only’ workshops to learn parenting skills to optimise their child's physical activity, dietary behaviours and social- emotional wellbeing.

The Greater Charitable Foundation has generously supported the Program since 2017, which has made a huge difference to hundreds of families across the Newcastle community. Dads have described the program as ‘genuinely life-changing’, while others have noticed huge changes in their kids’ health and wellbeing.

"Early childhood is when many life-long behaviours start. Support from the Greater Charitable Foundation for the Healthy Youngsters, Healthy Dads program has been critical in strengthening the unique relationships between fathers and their youngsters, and starting them on the right track for long term health and wellbeing.”

Professor Phil Morgan (PhD Education 2003; Bachelor of Education (Physical and Health Education) 1997) Co-Deputy-Director of the University of Newcastle Priority Research Centre for Physical Activity and Nutrition

"The Greater Charitable Foundation is proud to support Healthy Youngsters, Healthy Dads to deliver such practical, life-changing support to pass on healthy habits to the next generation.”

Anne Long (Graduate Diploma in Education 1987; Bachelor of Arts 1986) Chief Executive Officer, Greater Charitable Foundation

"You’ve helped me become a better parent. Bringing my daughter and I together in a fun and structured way has helped us as a family and given me confidence and practical tools to keep improving. Huge thanks to all of you.”
